Dear Parents,
Welcome to the Winter Season 2019.
This year I will be coaching/managing the Girton Opals U 12 Div 2 Side. I look forward to working with the
girls this season on their basketball and keeping you all well informed of what
we are achieving and aiming for.

Please ensure you have paid you basketball insurance
before Round 1. Your child can not take the court until the fee is paid.
It can be done online or at the stadium. Any enquiries regarding this may be directed
to our basketball administrator Deirdre Tunzi deirdretunzi@girton.vic.edu.au

GAME TIMES/ SCORING/VOTING
All parents are expected to score
and nominate 3 players for Best and Fairest votes. If you are unable to score
and vote at your scheduled game, please make a swap with another parent. I
will send a scoring roster reminder out each week. If you are uncomfortable or
unsure giving votes please liaise with me after each game. I will publish a
roster of scoring each week.
TRAINING
Training is Friday evenings unless notified (3.45-4.30pm.)
Please inform me ASAP if your child will not attend training or a game.
Students will this season, have sessions with the Bendigo Spirit/Braves
players. This is a valuable resource and I will be encouraging the girls to ask
plenty of questions and seek tips and tricks. There will be some sessions where
I will work with individual players on skills and focus goals and also some
opportunity for me to work with the girls as a team on some of the
fundamentals.
MY COACHING PHILOSOPHY
At this age the girls should enjoy what they are
doing. We will focus on basic basketball fundamentals that will help
their development as they get older.
This includes; dribbling, shooting, passing and some
basic defense and offense.
I will always encourage and use mistakes as teaching
tools for development. I will shout praise and whisper improvements. Players
will share equal court time as much as possible in game situations.
Winning is part of the U 12 structure and a ladder is
kept but for me winning is a by-product
of our focus on development and skills. If we succeed we will certainly
celebrate it but it is not a weekly goal.
INDIVIDUAL FOCUS
Having read my approach to the season
I would appreciate a few words from you in an email on what focus you
would like for your child individually. Whilst our team focus
is important, there will be times in games and at training that I will
look to encourage players to work on their individual goals. Please take the
time to discuss this with your daughter and let me know ASAP.
BLOG
I have a site dedicated to the OPALS. I will include
this address in all my correspondence so you can check it out regularly. I will
use it for pictures and some information regarding achievements and
developments. If you would not like your daughter’s photo posted, please let me
know ASAP.
https://girtonopals.blogspot.com/ Try it out now- It is live. I encourage you to
save it to your home screen of your computer or handheld device.
THE TEAM
Finally I encourage you to speak with
me personally if you need information or clarification at any time. I look forward to a season of development but most of
all a season of enjoyment and learning.
Our first game is Wednesday 24th
April at 4.30pm.
